Please read through pg. 271 of the PHB for a further understanding of close and area attacks; and pg. 290 on opportunity attacks.
Basically, a close attack is a melee attack; or some power that creates a blast or burst effect. A close blast or close burst does not warrant an opportunity attack
An area attack is a power that allows you to create a burst within a specified range. In this case, area bursts do give enemies an opportunity attack against you.
For powers that create a wall effect; whether it warrants an opportunity attack, depends on the keyword in the powers description. If it is a close effect, there is no opportunity attack granted.
For example, refer to pg. 159 of the PHB, assuming you are a wizard. If you use Scorching Burst or Cloud of Daggers, you trigger opportunity attacks from adjacent enemies, because the keyword in both powers is Area; and it is not a burst effect that originates from the spellcaster; as opposed to a close burst.
Therefore, using Thunderwave which is a Close blast 3, does not trigger opportunity attacks.
An example of a power that has a burst effect that does not trigger opportunity attacks would be the paladin's Divine Challenge found on pg. 91 of the PHB. The keyword is Close burst 5.
Any doubts can be clarified at the next gaming session.
