This thread is more of a FYI.
I mention to some of you what Hit Points in the DnD world meant, from the 4th Ed PHB this is what it says: Over the course of a battle, you take damage from attacks. Hit points (hp) measure your ability to stand up to punishment, turn deadly strikes into glancing blows, and stay on your feet throughout a battle. Hit points represent more than physical endurance. They represent your character’s skill, luck, and resolve—all the factors that combine to help you stay alive in a combat situation.
From the 3.5 Ed PHB: Hit points mean two things in the game world: the ability to take physical punishment and keep going, and the ablity to turn a serious blow into a less serious one. For some characters, hit point may represent divine favor or inner power. When a paladin survives a fireball, you will be hard pressed to convince bystanders that she doesn't have the favor or some higher power.
So taking damage doesn't necessarily mean being a gashing wound or your hand is chopped off. Its more, as mention above, turning a critical blow to a glancing one if say, you are still standing from after taking a crit from the orc with the great sword. Kinda like watching heroes in movies e.g. Spiderman after being knocked into a wall here and smashed into a car there, the web crawler is still swinging around and kicking butt, then he takes a blow like a punch to the head and he is unconscious. ;D
