On pg. 281 of the PHB, there are rules covering combat if your PC is blinded, or you're fighting through darkness, or the enemy is invisible.
I have read through the PHB thoroughly, and suddenly I realise Mobius has made a point. Therefore, this is the final verdict.
When you are fighting in darkness
When an area is in darkness, I will remove all monster tokens and terrain features within the specified area of darkness. Except for PC tokens.
In this situation, movement is not an issue. You can move as per normal despite not being able to see. However, melee and ranged attacks suffer a -5 penalty. Close and area attacks do not suffer any penalty.
However, to locate the target's location, you have 2 options.
Option 1
You use your Perception check against the target's stealth.
Option 2
You pick a square randomly.
Whether it's Option 1 or 2, you still suffer a -5 penalty for melee and ranged attacks.
When the target is invisible
This is the easiest to deal with, I will just remove the monster's token.
However, to locate the target's location, you have 2 options.
Option 1
You use your Perception check against the target's stealth.
Option 2
You pick a square randomly.
Whether it's Option 1 or 2, you still suffer a -5 penalty for melee and ranged attacks.
When you are blinded
This is the most trickiest to deal with, and try hard as I might, I can't really decipher definite rules for it. And if you are blinded, I can't possible remove all the tokens on the battle map.
However, to locate the target's location when you are blinded, you have 2 options.
Option 1
You use your Perception check with a -10 penalty against the target's Stealth to locate the target's square.
Option 2
You pick a square randomly. [refer to the House Rule below]
Melee and ranged attacks suffer a -5 penalty as usual.
House Rule
However, if you choose to pick a square when you are blinded, you still have to use the Perception check with a -10 penalty against the target's stealth for you to 'choose the square correctly'.
Therefore, I would probably assume that most PCs would just use their Perception Checks instead of just 'picking a square when blinded'
In the event that you fail, I will roll a d8 for directional purposes and that is the direction that your attack will take place.
And in terms of movement when you are blinded, I will make it simple and assume that your PC feels his way before moving and is able to move normally.
I hope this clarifies all doubts about fighting in darkness, when the enemy is invisible, or when your PC is blinded.
