This following excerpt is based on a D&D session that took place on 14th March 2009 from the late afternoon. The party of 4 comprises of Ainarielle – Tiefling Rogue (played by Grace); Ashin – Elven Ranger (played by Weide); Marmertus - Dragonborn Warlord (played by Marcus); and Mobius – Human Wizard (played by Edmund). The adventure is based on the adventure module provided for in the D&D 4th Edition Dungeon Master's Guide. Do note that although the Nentir Vale is a generic location, it has been embedded into the continent of Faerun of the Forgotten Realms campaign setting.
Location and Timeline
It is the year 1479 DR. The heroes start off in the town of Fallcrest located within the Nentir Vale. Almost a hundred years have passed since the Spellplague in 1385DR.
Situation - Terrible Secret
The heroes gather in the taproom of the Nentir Inn, exchanging past glories of personal achievements. Marmertus shares the tales of betrayal in his previous company, leading him to lead this life of adventure instead. Ashin speaks of vengeance against the Woodsinger Clan from the Harken Forest. Ainarielle twirls her tail as she recounts interesting tales of suspense and wonder; which the warlord is doubtful of. And... Mobius sinks at the corner, sipping on his ale, preferring to absorb any potent information from the tales exchanged between the rest.
In the midst of the conversation, Mobius' fellow-student rushes into the taproom. The halfling; Tobolar Quickfoot urges the wizard to return back to the Septarch's Tower. As the heroes take no action, the halfling reaches for a scroll and casts a teleportation spell, sending the group right into the room of the High Septarch.
Nimozaran the Green chides Mobius for being late; and welcomes the rest. The wizard then goes on to relay to the heroes that Fallcrest has been the target of some gold-hungry kobolds and offers the heroes 100 gp in return for their favour to check out the kobolds. Nimozaran goes on to claim that the kobolds could be under the control of some greater power.
Encounter 1 - Sludge Pit
The heroes enter the ruins of Kobold Hall. The encounter pits the PCs against 5 kobolds; comprising of 3 kobold skirmishers and 2 kobold slingers. The PCs manage to defeat the kobolds without much difficulty. Initiative die rolls seem to fare badly for Marmertus again; and Mobius scores badly at Magic Missiles again.
Encounter 2 - The Tomb
The chamber contains 4 coffins showing signs of vandalism and abuse. The PCs are exposed to dart traps coming out from suits of armour set in niches along the wall. The PCs manage to defeat the kobold skirmishers at the altar of Tiamat; the God of Greed.
PCs spend time on opening the lids of the coffins... for fear that something might pop up. [And the DM feels it is a waste of time]
Encounter 3 - Skull-Skull!
PCs encounter a group of kobolds involved in some game; whereby the kobolds swing a rope with a stone attached at the end of the rope, and the kobolds attempt to use the stone to hit skulls that are arrayed on top of the coffins within the chamber. Here, the PCs face difficulty in getting close to the kobolds. However, Mobius' Scorching Burst seems to be more effective here. Ashin, upon clmbing up the raised platform, realise that there are 2 more Guard Drakes around; which the PCs manage to defeat after climbing up and down, and running about.
Encounter 4 - The Big Boss
This is the most exciting part of the day's session. The PCs enter a room and to their horror, they realise that a rolling boulder has been released, and it rolls round and round the room. On top of that they face 2 Kobold Dragonshields, 2 Kobold Slingers, a Kobold Wyrmpriest and a Spiretop Drake.
It is here that the PCs experience near-death situations. And ironically... it is this moment that the PCs decide to band together and fight the greater evil. Even Ainarielle hides from hiding and comes out to fight. Ashin unleashes more arrows of anger at the kobolds. Even Mobius uses his quarterstaff to attack~! (much to the applause of the others). There was even a moment when the boulder was rolling about and Mobius was stuck in a corner with the Wyrmpriest advancing. In a rash decision, Marmertus rushes past Mobius and dashes towards the wyrmpriest and grabs hold of the wyrmpriest as the boulder is rushing towards them; in a bid to die with the wyrmpriest as the boulder is rushing towards them [Marmertus's act of self-sacrifice drew much peals of laughter]. Fortunately, the boulder crushes the wyrmpriest and stops in its tracks.
It is then that Mobius discovers the Staff of the War Mage.
The heroes decide to move on... and face the final encounter. And the session ends with a cliffhanger.
In the next session, Mobius would have to prove the might of his staff. Would Marmertus be slain? And, the introduction of a new party member - a goliath fighter.
