Yohoho. Seeing as we won't be having a full campaign / dungeon delve session till like late December, this would be an ideal time to explore other aspects of this hobby!
I am keen in exploring either other game systems or settings for D&D, pending player availability and interest. Here are some of the things I'm interested in running / playing =P
1) Call of Cthulu RPG
Edmund came up to the other day to talk about the Call of Cthulu RPG. It is described as a horror fiction role-playing game, and it has been using largely the same ruleset since 1981 (which is just a couple of years behind the first D&D edition). For players with a very strong role-playing interest and like to see their beloved characters die, go insane or worse, this is a perfect noir setting for you! Usually, if you're fighting, the odds are typically not in your favour, so we do tend to spend alot of time running away. There's magic, but casting spells cost precious Sanity..
I have the 6th edition Rulebook for CoC, but additionally there is a CoC d20 ruleset for 3.5 players if people don't want to learn a new system. In this game, system doesn't really matter, setting does, thou d20 is built more for fighting and the normal system more for investigating.
No prior knowledge of the setting is required, as all you are a normal person living in the 1920s and you slowly uncover the horrible truths of the world around you
2) Planescape (D&D 4th edition)
This is why I bought the boxset off Jin! Ahahaha althou the rules are 4th edition, there's much fluff waiting to be used, and the mechanics can be tweaked and adapted. Be a wanderer of the Inner and Outer planes! Worship strange new gods, or kill them and take their place! Join one of the 15 factions with radically different beliefs! Fight the Lady of Pain, and get Mazed in the process!
A one-shot or short campaign of this game will be in Sigil, City of Doors, the original version and not the wimpy one in DMG2, thou time will be needed for players to learn the setting, and for me to develop setting specific feats / powers perhaps?
3) ·çÔÆ Feng Yun RPG (Wuxia Action Series)
There is an ang-moh RPG for the Éñ±øÐþÆæ Shen Bing Xuan Qi (Weapon of the Gods) setting called "Wuxia Action Series". It is a d10 system where you roll and collect "sets" of d10 to use your awesome martial arts powers to destroy your opponents. I bought the book in the UK but its bloody hard to get people to play this there since no one is really interested. Personally I don't care much about Shen Bing storyline, but I am thinking of using the rule set to adapt for Feng Yun, a setting I am much more familiar with. In this game, you can essentially throw investigation out of the window.. how many times do you see people doing investigation of any amount in comics anyway? Its quite a big fighting system, and would like to try it out for abit. Of course I will have to rewrite the powers to follow Feng Yun, but it is an investment I would do.
4) Warhammer Fantasy Role Playing
More for interest sake than anything else. Use funny dice! When your class is "rat catcher" or "peasant", who can resist? Don't know much about Warhammer thou.
Arranged in order of interest. Anyone else game? =)
