This following excerpt is based on a D&D session that took place on 6th February 2009 in the evening. The party of 4 comprises of Ainarielle –Halfling Rogue (played by Grace); Ashin – Dragonborn Paladin (played by Weide); Bot – Human Cleric(played by Marcus); and Mobius – Eladrin Wizard (played by Edmund). Sadly, nobody wanted to take the role of the Dwarf Fighter. The adventure is based on the adventure module provided for in the D&D 4th Edition Starter Set.
Location
Harken Village is just situated near the White River; along the King’s Road. If you travel upwards along the King’s Road, you would pass by the town of Fallcrest; the birthplace of the new generation of heroes (or rather, villainous heroes) in time to come.
Situation
Harken Village has been troubled by goblin raiders that attack in the dead of night. In a bid to save the people of the village, one of the town elders – Old Keller, had approached the group of heroes who happened to pass by Harken Village; and had dropped by at the tavern – Cliffside Brewery.
The offer was only 25 gold pieces for each member of the party; which only sums up to a pathetic amount of 100 gold pieces. Nonetheless, pushed on by Ashin and Bot; Ainarielle and Mobius have no choice but to follow along.
Encounter #1 – Enter the dungeon
Lead by Old Keller himself; the heroes are brought to the ancient ruins beneath the village leading to the dungeon. The heroes find themselves facing up with 3 Goblin Warriors and 2 Goblin Blackblades. The only spectacular moment here was how the heroes had wanted to back out; but the cave is locked… [how on earth did the DM manage to come up with a theory that the cave is secured with a gate and padlock?]
Nonetheless, the heroes managed to vanquish the goblins, and Mobius was grumbling that it should be more than 25 gold pieces.
And this was the start of the misfiring magic missiles.
Encounter #2 – Hall of vermin
The heroes meet up with more goblins; coupled with fire beetles and giant rats. The battle here got more intense and shows the selflessness of Ashin’s battle tactics; as he calls upon the powers of his Channel Divinity; and uses Divine Challenge against the enemies.
Bot seem to react slow to the call of battle; usually getting to be the last to act. Mobius also seems to fail in his magic missiles time and again. The irony of it is; magic-missiles are at-will powers. Ainarielle is always seen to be dodging attacks here and there; using her Sky Flourish attacks time and again.
Nevertheless, the heroes manage to defeat the enemies; although the Goblin Hexer managed to escape.
Encounter #3 – Leader of the pack
When the heroes entered the room; they somehow wished they could just reverse and run back. Especially Mobius, when he saw the dire wolf locked behind the portcullis.
More magic missile madness here; even the acid arrows from the eladrin wizard didn’t do much. How the hobgoblins kept raising the portcullis, and how frantically the heroes try to shut it down again. The heroes managed to defeat the dire wolf by the stroke of luck; unleashing the portcullis down onto the dire wolf as it tried to escape out from the cell. As if battling a gray wolf wasn’t enough, the heroes had to go through the trauma of dealing with a dire wolf; and knowing the fact that the entrance / exit of the dungeon is locked.
EPILOGUE
Putting down the goblins and other creatures is something that can only stall the evil lurking for the time being. No one knows what happened to the heroes that had entered the ancient ruins beneath Harken Village; because nothing had been heard of them since the fateful day they entered the dungeons.
As Harken Village has to brace itself for future raiding goblins… further up the King’s Road, a new destiny epic starts off in the town of Fallcrest, as a dragonborn warlord; a vengeance-seeking elf ranger; a power-hungry human wizard; and a mysterious tiefling rogue come together to forge new legendary tales.
