This following excerpt is based on a D&D session that took place on 14th June 2009 from 2100hrs until about 0300hrs the next day.
The party of 4 comprises of Tas'sadar - Genasi Warlord (played by Marcus); Mobius – Human Wizard (played by Edmund); Romean – Elven Cleric (played by Mark); and Gond Oremighty - Goliath Fighter (played by Eugene).
The session continues with the PCs who had just returned from the bandits hideout at Zelbross.
Do note that although the Nentir Vale is a generic location, it has been embedded into the continent of Faerun of the Forgotten Realms campaign setting.
The Draigdurroch Tower
Gond, Tas’sadar, Romean and Mobius enter the Green Tankard Tavern and hand over the children to Captain Harrowleaf; who promises to return the children back to their respective villages. Hailed as heroes and amidst the crowds gathering round the heroes, a messenger of Lady Moonfire approaches the party and hands to them a letter of invitation to a ball held at the Manor House.
Dressed in masks; Mobius with a wolfhead, Tas’sadar with a mask desgned after the Phantom of the Opera, and Romean with a theatre mask… only Gond refuses to wear his mask. Approached by a man at the party, Gond arrogantly tells the man that they are indeed the heroes who have helped fought the dangers posed to Loudwater and also proudly tells the man that there is no difference between dragons and dracoliches.
Lady Moonfire eventually approaches the party and offers a reward to the PCs if the they are willing to escort her to the Dire Woods as she is interested in unravelling the secrets of the tower – where the warlock Draigdurroch was never seen again.
Encounter 1 – The Homunculus…
The party come across the ice-covered bridge that leads to the tower. Facing treacherous ice sheets, the PCs tread carefully along the bridge only to face two winged demons and two cobra-like statues come alive. Having to tread along the treacherous ice sheets and the homunculus, the heroes managed to defeat the homunculus without much trouble.
Encounter 2 – Flying Blades
The PCs enter a huge chamber with stairwells leading up at both ends and a centre one that leads down. Zombies attack the PCs and a whirling blade flies about in the room as a trap is triggered. The PCs however, manage to deal with the adversaries without much trouble, as Mobius manages to destroy the whirling blade. The PCs decide to walk upstairs and open the door to the left room
Encounter 3 – Brain in a Jar II
The PCs enter the room and discover a slightly broken jar in the corner of the room and crawling claws around the room. The PCs remember the dangers these undead beings could pose. The PCs also died as the brain in the jar kept disappearing and dominating the heroes, as the swarm of claws kept having free attacks against the PCs. After much effort, the PCs manage to vanquish the undead… and the PCs realise that the tower is more deadly than they thought. Approaching the door to the right room, Romean could hear the sounds of small little girls giggling.
Encounter 4 – Poltergeists!
The PCs open the door and they see 4 ghostlike girls floating around the room as they start to shriek upon seeing the PCs. It is in this room, which is very cold, that the PCs were nearly defeated. Nothing could seem to bring the poltergeists down as they kept hurling the PCs about and restraining the PCs from moving. Gond, Romean, Mobius and Tass’sadar were almost close to death. Romean, was unconscious twice… even Gond whimpered at a corner, afraid to get close to the ghosts… Tas’sadar was petrified and all his warlord heroism seemed to have ebbed away. Mobius, with all his own dark visions of greater power felt fear. When he was pushed out of the room and tumbled down the stairs, he had a good mind to run away and leave the rest alone, but it was his greed for power that lead him back. But even then, his powers were pathetic to the might of the Shadowfell. Even Romean, as much as he believed in Chauntea, began to felt fear grip the depths of his heart.
And as Gond sat at the corner, hiding behind the bed, fear seizing the big-sized fighter, when suddenly, a god-like voice spoke to him… “Get close to them, for they cannot harm you as you thought they would…”
With his goliath fury, Gond managed to walk further than he could have, and managed to crush the poltergeist in two blows…
Lady Moonfire then appeared and closed the doors of the room and cast a spell of warding that would last enough for the PCs to rest and recover…
DM's afterword
This must have been the most toughest session, in a sense that if I did not held back, the party would have been wiped out.
The lesson learned in this session is that, you must have ample supplies of healing potions. And tactical movements are a must, since these monsters are more powerful. Oh yes, some of you might consider retraining some skills like Religion, Arcana and Dungeoneering… as they would serve very useful in helping you to hit the DC required to understand the nature of the enemy that you face.
There will be more to come *evil laughter*
