This following excerpt is based on a D&D session that took place on 9th May 2009 from the late afternoon until the early hours the next day.
The conclusion of the Catacombs of Fallcrest is played by a party of 4 comprising of Tas'sadar - Genasi Warlord (played by Marcus); Mobius – Human Wizard (played by Edmund); Xenith the IX - Human Cleric (played by Mark); and Gond Oremighty - Goliath Fighter (played by Eugene).
The session continues with the PCs in the Catacombs of Fallcrest.
Do note that although the Nentir Vale is a generic location, it has been embedded into the continent of Faerun of the Forgotten Realms campaign setting.
The catacombs of Fallcrest
Encounter 8 - Guardroom
The party comes into a chamber with 5 hobgoblins playing a game of cards. But before the leader - Agraak can get into a conversation, Gond charges into battle and the party emerges victorious. Poor Agraak never got to say what he wanted to say.
Encounter 10 - The Shadar-kai Encounter
The party enters the chamber when the door opened on its own. Tas'sadar stands rooted, immobilised as he recalls the memories along the Dragon Coast. Somehow, the party manage to defeat the shadar-kai [especially when she could deal 5 dmg almost every time the PCs get near to her. After defeating her, she was tied up and given a huge funeral pyre...
And it is also here when the PCs discover a letter from the High Shaman Sancossug.
Encounter 9 - Natural Pests
The party faces an easy encounter of fire beetles and stirges.
The second part of the session after dinner is played by a party of 5 comprising of Tas'sadar - Genasi Warlord (played by Marcus); Mobius – Human Wizard (played by Edmund); Romean - Elven Cleric (played by Mark); Ainarielle - Tiefling Rogue; and Gond Oremighty - Goliath Fighter (played by Eugene).
Location and Timeline
It is the 8th day of Alturiak; year 1479 DR at the Sewers of Col Fen
Situation - Retrieving Marmertus' corpse
The DMC decide to recover the body of Marmertus at Col Fen. Although it wasn't easy as the body had been stolen by a group of undeads. Facing the kobolds and dread zombies were not difficult, it was the sodden ghoul wailer that was the killer. the rending attacks were enough to tear Gond into bits and pieces, if not for the Romean's saving powers. Eventually, the body is transported back to the Tower of the High Septarch.
Location and Timeline
It is the 9th day of Alturiak; year 1479 DR at Moonstone Keep.
Situation - Moonstone Keep
The PCs fail at two Skill Encounters; one with the guards at the entrance, and the second in an audience with the Lord Warden - Faren Markelhay.
Encounter 1 - Dragon Ambush!
As the PCs retire for the night in one of the guest rooms, the door breaks open and a black dragon enters! By Crom... this makes no sense. In any case, the party manages to survive the ordeal only to find that they have been somehow 'teleported' to a different part of the keep.
Encounter 2 - Double Identities...
The PCs step through the doors of the guest room and enter a cavernous hall [with a river flowing at one corner?!] and face four warforged fighters keeping guard on the real Lord Warden. However, even before the PCs can question the Lord Warden, a doppelganger appears as Faren and kills the real Lord Warden.
Encounter 3 - The Brain In A Jar
The PCs climb the stairs back into a room. This time they encounter monsters all courtesy of the Open Grave supplement. Other than dealing with a Brain in a Jar that dominated Tas'sadar... they had to fend off a manta-ray like skin that flies around, and hands that crawled over the floor. It was the DM's dim-witted memory that allowed the hands to miss taking attacks every time.
Encounter 4 - Lady Markelhay
The PCs enter a room and see the wife of the Lord Warden in the arms of Amros Kamroth. 4 doppelgangers to the adulterous couple could not prevent DMC from killing them all. The PCs killed the wife easily, although they were abit shocked that she could have died that easily.
DM's afterthought
The game, as usual, was a good one. The miniatures sure did help to liven battle scenes. There were still mistakes in applying the rules, and it helps if players notice anything amiss. I can't wait for the next session, as the PCs will be moving out of Fallcrest into the real lands of Faerun.
