Think of it like 3.5ed to 4th ed. Mechanics are simplified, and you get a new variety of monsters and classes. But it retains the classic diablo hack & slash gameplay. Do not expect D3 to be a mmorpg.
Anyways, it was just a beta featuring a short act - akin to fighting blood raven in D2... So there's muuuuuch more to expect in the actual, full version.
If you loved D2, you will too for D3.

See thread here: D3 Mac Lag - Service Issues: NVIDIA 9400M/9600 GT – June 1
Edited by Machkhan on 6/6/12 12:02 PM (PDT)
We've been closely monitoring community feedback since the launch of Diablo III. The top issue for our Mac players is performance, especially on low-end cards such as the NVIDIA 9400M. We’re working on an optimization update to significantly improve performance for the NVIDIA 9400M. Other cards will see a modest but noticeable increase in FPS. This fix will be available in the near future.
If you’re a Mac user currently experiencing low performance issues, try these steps:
•If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics cards, such as NVIDIA 9400M/9600 GT, set your system for higher performance. This should resolve many performance issues you may experience. •MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008), (17-inch, Early 2009), (15-inch and 17-inch, Mid 2009): How to set graphics performance •MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) and later, MacBook Pro (17-inch, Mid 2010) and later: How to set graphics performance •Reboot your computer to clear your computer’s memory, then reattempt login. •Close as many background applications as possible. •Additionally, try these troubleshooting steps for Diablo III Slow/Choppy performance. •If you are experiencing black screens, try these steps for Diablo III Lockups and Crashes. Please note that ATI X1600 and Intel X3100 graphics chipsets are not supported for Diablo III.
We want all our players to be able to fully enjoy conquering evil in Diablo III. We will provide further information as it becomes available.
Update June 1: The problem has been identified and a solution has been implemented. The patch is being tested. The patch also contains other changes that need testing. If everything is fine, it will be shipped soon.
Update June 5th: 1.0.2b will have Mac performance improvements which should be implemented on 6/6/12. See patch notes here.
