Summary:
Merdan was having a field day insulting and inspiring Inius between one moment and the next. His faulty memory couldn't recall the answering phrase to "The cleansing flame thrives even during the coldest night..." Luckily some of his party members could provide the following line: "Should you seek to open the conflagration of souls, you need to ask the Traveller from beyond the Stars." Thusly convincing, Inius grudingly followed the party out onto the streets of Sembia, with the intent of fleeing the city and evading the guards with the information in hand.
Merdan led the party along the streets and into the markets, where inquiring a passerby confirmed that there was a shortcut through a tavern to near the city gates. The guards came into the tavern, but didn't spot the intrepid heroes. Freaked out, Friar Tuck decided to head out of the city his own way. Merdan didn't really care much except for his own escape. After Trundel discovered horses in the stables, Merdan, Inius, Pavvo and Sorrvan leapt onto the horses and charged the city guards, bashing through the city gates before they could raise the alarm. Trundel decided to make his own escape out of the city. Alas poor Inius didn't make it out alive, and Merdan spent some time to give the man a proper burial outside the city. Regrouping with Tuck but missing Trundel, the party pressed on.
Proceeding on, the party came upon a pack of hobgoblins holed up in a ruined tower, discussing about something called the Trinity Thorns. Merdan didn't really care much about the hobgoblins, except they were talking about gold and the tower seemed like a good place to rest for the night. Unfortunately in his awesome presence the hobgoblins had their butts kicked without much effort, and the party pressed on with their newfound horses.
Shortly after Trundel caught up with the party, just in time to help being waylaid by skeletons of the exploding variety along a ravine. Merdan attempted multiple times to shove the skeletons out of the way, but to no avail. Some good tactics by Pavvo locked down a blazing skeleton before it could cause havoc amongst the party. Fight was a close shave.
Finally right at the border into Cormyr, the party was once again waylaid by a group of evil doers, who even had the time and luxury to dig up the poor corpse of Inius and leave it at the road side, while at the same time getting ahead of the party along the road. Once combat started it was off to a good start till the mage summoned a terrible demon that tore the Friar Tuck and Trundel into little bits and pieces and ate them for breakfast. Luckily the party had the help of Strahd, an eladrin wizard in a billowing black cape, whose magic missiles and flaming sphere won the battle of attrition.
For their heroic efforts, the party received:
600 XP (total of 1400XP)
Symbol of Life +1 (healing thingy)
Cloak of Resistance +1 (resist some element)
Vicious Longbow +1 (+1d12 on a crit)
